Liquigas Sends Young Guns in Turkey

The prestigious Italian team Liquigas-Doimo has a strong politic of development, as it appears at their first participation to the Tour of Turkey.

On April 11, Liquigas-Doimo will line up at the Tour of Turkey for the first time ever. This is due to the positive feedback they got from other teams who took part in the event previously. At the difference of other Italian teams, they won’t use the Tour of Turkey as a preparation for the Giro d’Italia. They have opted for a group of young professionals in order to give them the opportunity to take their chance.

“Originally, we thought we’d take Daniele Bennati and Peter Sagan to the Tour of Turkey”, explained directeur sportif Dario Mariuzzo. “But we have to give them a rest after they delivered great results. Bennati will not take part in any stage race until the Giro d’Italia. Sagan is only 20 years old. He amazed everyone during Paris-Nice but we shouldn’t be too enthusiastic too quickly about him. However, the Tour of Turkey is very important to us because we do have great champions at Liquigas-Doimo but we also have great up and coming riders. We want to develop them.”

This is the case for Elia Viviani who has already won a stage in the Tour of Cuba this year. He’ll go to Turkey to challenge sprinters like Andre Greipel from HTC-Columbia and Sacha Modolo of Colnago-CSF who recently came 4th at Milan-San Remo.

“In many professional teams, when a young rider arrives, he get tested by his work at the service of the captains”, Mariuzzo said. “We have a different approach this time. Our guys will have the opportunity to ride for themselves. They’ll be more than welcome to try and win a stage. The Tour of Turkey will reveal their personality and their motivation.”

Liquigas-Doimo will line up Tiziano Dall’Antonia who has taken part in the past two Tour of Turkey and will therefore act as a guide for his team-mates. Polish time triallist Maciej Bodnar will focus on the prologue in Istanbul as he’ll resume racing after breaking a collarbone in December. “These two riders are in a different situation than the other guys”, Mariuzzo continued. “They’re part of a group of 12 riders likely to ride the Giro d’Italia. In Turkey, they’ll have to convince us about their capacity of supporting Franco Pellizotti, Ivan Basso and Daniele Bennati in May.”

Liquigas-Doimo is the team that has the highest number of wins since the beginning of the cycling season in January. As they want to stay on top of the world’s counting, they are expected to win at least a stage in Turkey.

Fifth stage win for Greipel, first stage race overall win for Visconti

Giovanni Visconti will bring back the first “Turquoise maillot” to Italy as the colour of the leader’s jersey has changed from yellow to the mythical colour of Turkish birthstone this year.
