The year 2008 will mark Cañada´s 13th season as a professional
rider. In 2006, he was the final winner of the
Volta a Catalunya, an UCI ProTour event, ahead of Botero and Moreau.
Following a great performance as a young gun, Cañada entered the
professional peloton with ONCE when he was 21 years old. He stayed with
them for five years, reaching his peak in 2000, when he basked in five
overall victories and wore the jersey for best young rider in the Tour de
France. The following year he signed with Mapei to be the team´s leader in
the French grand tour; however, he´s been affected by an endless
succession of lesions and physical problems since then, which have
prevented him from showing what he can do on the road. He´s been in the
yellow squad since 2004. In 2007, he worked hard for his teammates,
reaching his peak in the
US,
where he managed 3rd in Georgia and 4th in
Missouri. |

He subsequently accessed the professional level with the recently created
Orbea Continental team. Del Nero did a god job in this team, claiming the
only Orbea´s victory -a stage win- in the Tour del Porvenir, where he was
close to take the points leadership. Moreover, he was 13th in the tough
Vuelta a Portugal, showing his multiple capabilities, both as a fastman
and climber, which he was able to show again when he was riding with 3
Molinos Resort, in 2006. Finally, he climbed onto the Euskal Bizikleta´s
final podium. Del Nero managed 2nd in Llodio, 4th in the Japan Cup and
11th in the Tour of Flanders, the best standing ever for a Spanish cyclist
in the Flemish tour. |
